Agartala: Sept 12: On Thursday afternoon, students from various colleges affiliated with Tripura Central University blocked the road in the Battala area, demanding to be passed after failing their first semester exams. The protest, which took place in front of the Education Building, posed a challenge for the police to control.

According to the protesting students, over 18,000 students appeared for the first semester exams, but only around 2,000 passed, leaving a significant number unable to progress to the second semester. The students alleged that the college authorities have been imposing unfamiliar subjects on them since the beginning, contributing to their difficulties.

The students highlighted issues such as a shortage of proper books and inadequate library resources. They claimed that the introduction of certain subjects, in compliance with central government directives, has created additional challenges. For example, the recent inclusion of Hindi in the curriculum has been problematic for students who have traditionally studied Sanskrit. The lack of qualified Hindi teachers and the complexity of the subject have further compounded their difficulties.

Despite underlying resentment among parents, there has been little public expression of these concerns. The students believe that the state education department officials are aware of the issues but are not addressing them adequately.
