Agartala, August 1, 2024 – The sudden and mysterious death of Abhijit Panda, a student enrolled in the Triple IT program at NIT Agartala, has led to significant unrest on the college campus. The situation, which escalated last night, was eventually brought under control through police intervention.

Students have alleged that the death was a result of negligence on the part of the college authorities. In response to the incident, the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) staged a protest on the campus today, demanding the immediate formation of an inquiry committee and necessary action against those responsible.

Abhijit Panda, originally from Chhattisgarh, had reportedly been feeling unwell for several days. Students claim that despite his condition, the authorities did not provide him with the necessary medical treatment. It is further alleged that even after his admission to GB Hospital, the college authorities did not visit to check on his health. His family, who rushed from Chhattisgarh upon hearing the news, were taking him home on medical advice when he passed away en route.

The news of Panda’s death quickly spread, causing tension among the students. The college authorities’ initial attempts to manage the situation were unsuccessful, leading to police being called in to restore order.

Today, Swarup Kumar Shil, the state president of NSUI, visited the campus to observe the situation and engage with the protesters. Addressing the media, Shil described the incident as extremely unfortunate and reiterated the organization’s demand for an inquiry committee. He also informed that the college authorities had formed an 8-member committee to investigate the matter. Shil warned that if the committee fails to uncover the truth, NSUI would escalate their protest.

The college authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the incident. The newly formed committee is expected to begin its investigation immediately.
