Agartala: July 13: In a concerning turn of events, the upcoming Panchayat elections in Tripura are facing disruptions and allegations of violence. Opposition leader Jitendra Chowdhury has accused the Election Commission of being embroiled in a tainted chapter, echoing similar concerns from the 2019 elections.

Since the announcement of the election date, candidates supported by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) have been targeted by miscreants. These attacks have prevented them from submitting their nomination papers, resulting in injuries to party workers and leaders. The situation has escalated, creating an atmosphere of fear throughout the state.

Jitendra Chowdhury further revealed that some CPM candidates were unable to submit their nomination papers. In response, a CPM delegation submitted a four-point demand to the Election Commission: Extend the deadline for nomination paper submission until July 25. Regularize the submission process for Panchayats and Panchayat Samiti by allowing submissions at the District Collector’s office. Establish additional counters in eight districts to facilitate nominations. Ensure secure submission of nomination papers through Escot for opposition-backed candidates.

The delegation also called for immediate action against those responsible for the attacks. As the election unfolds, concerns persist about the impact of violence on the electoral process.
