Two persons including the prime accused in a gang rape incident of college girl in Tripura capital Agartala have been arrested said police.
Superintendent of Police (SP) West Tripura district Dr Kiran Kumar K said, “We received the complain yesterday that a girl has been raped by a person and immediately we registered a complain in Amtali police station under 376 IPC and we have arrested the FIR named AP (accused person) who is under custody now. During his interrogation he has revealed that there were some more persons who were involved in this incident and he has named one more person and we have arrested him also just one hour back. Investigation is going on and we are interrogating both of them.”
The incident took place on Monday afternoon when she was returning from her college in the outskirts of the city. At present the victim is under treatment in the AGMC and GB hospital.
The SP added that the girl and the accused rapist seems knew each other and on the day of the incident both had roamed in a vehicle and later in the evening she was gang raped in that vehicle in a lonely area in the outskirts of Agartala.
A DSP level woman officer has been appointed as investigating officer (IO) in the sensitive case.
On Thursday, various opposition CPIM led organisations and student bodies gathered in front of the Tripura Police headquarters in the capital city and organised protests against the gang-rape of the college student here and demanded for arrest of the culprits and severe punishment beside free treatment of the victim and security for her family.
Later a delegation of seven persons among the protesters also met SP West Tripura district and placed their demand.
Meantime, the prime accused Gautam Sharma has been produced in the local court here with appeal for police remand for further interrogation while one more arrested person has been identified as one Sudip Chetri.
