Agartala: Twenty-five beneficiaries from Goatery Producer Groups (PGs) in Tripura, accompanied by five project officials, participated in a three-day exposure visit to the ICAR-Central Institute for Research on Goats (ICAR-CIRG) at Makhdoom, Farah in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, to gain practical knowledge of scientific goat farming.

The programme, organised from July 28 to 30, 2026 as part of the TRESP project, aimed at strengthening livestock-based livelihoods by introducing farmers to modern, scientific and cost-effective goat-rearing practices.

During the three-day programme, ICAR-CIRG experts conducted classroom sessions and hands-on field demonstrations covering major aspects of goat management. Participants were introduced to goat breeds found in India and Tripura, nutritional requirements, feed ingredients and feeding practices.

Experts also explained scientific housing and management, fodder processing and mechanisation, goat health care and the benefits of adopting improved farming techniques. Special emphasis was placed on reproductive management and the role of Artificial Insemination (AI).

Practical demonstrations provided participants with experience in vaccination, first aid, deworming, drenching, medicated bathing, hoof trimming, animal identification, sanitation, seasonal housing management and body-weight measurement.

The beneficiaries were also trained in reproductive practices such as heat detection, estrus synchronisation, pregnancy diagnosis and Artificial Insemination.

Another important component focused on value addition to goat milk and meat. Participants attended demonstrations on the preparation and processing of goat milk products and explored opportunities to generate additional income through value-added livestock products.

Officials said the exposure programme strengthened the Producer Group members’ knowledge of breeding, feeding, housing, disease prevention and herd management, enabling them to adopt productivity-enhancing practices in Tripura.

The programme follows earlier exposure visits organised under TRESP for 125 Piggery Producer Group members to the ICAR-National Research Centre on Pig at Rani, Assam, in five batches.

At the conclusion of the Mathura visit, participating Goatery Producer Group members received certificates recognising their participation and successful completion of the programme.
