Agartala: Mayor Agartala Municipal Corporation Dipak Majumder on Friday said that as many as ten major markets of Agartala city will go for total facelift in order to give them a public-friendly shape.
While inspecting the GB Bazar area, Majumder said, “In view of the consistently rising traffic snarls in the city areas, the AMC has taken a decision to initiate massive redevelopment of the 10 major markets of the city. The list includes a Maharaj Ganja Bazar, GB Bazar, MB Tilla Bazar, Battala Bazar etc”.
According to the mayor, GB Bazar is in the top of priority list because of its strategic location near the state’s biggest referral hospital.
“GB Bazar is very close to the GBP hospital. Due to mismanagements and lack of space in connecting roads, both the consumers and patients suffer. The biggest problem that stuck the development of the GB Bazar area is the long pending road expansion work. The roads need to be widened to ensure swift and sound movement of vehicle. For that, a lot of vendors who used to sell their goods in open street shops have been evicted but we are working on their proper rehabilitation”, the Mayor added.
On being asked about the budget, the Mayor said, “A survey will be conducted before the construction is started. The cost of project will be based on the survey report that will try to ascertain how many people daily visit the market. A dedicated area for parking has also been planned adjacent to the main market building”.
