Ambassa, Nov 1: In a tragic accident, a worker lost his life after being buried under a mass of soil following a mudslide in the Kulai area under the Ambassa subdivision on Saturday afternoon.
The deceased has been identified as Jiten Shabdakar, a resident of Kulai. According to local sources, the incident occurred when Jiten was engaged in soil-cutting work near the Satsang Ashram along the Ambassa–Kamalpur road. While he was working, a large portion of the earthen surface suddenly gave way, collapsing on him and trapping him beneath the debris.
Upon receiving information, firefighters and local residents rushed to the spot and immediately launched a rescue operation. Despite their efforts, the rescue proved extremely challenging as the victim was buried deep under several layers of soil. After a prolonged operation, Jiten was eventually pulled out and taken to the Kulai District Hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Eyewitnesses said the collapse happened within seconds, leaving no time for the worker to escape. They also alleged that no safety measures or protective arrangements were in place at the site during the soil excavation work, raising concerns over occupational safety and supervision in such hazardous tasks.
Local residents expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing Jiten as a hardworking individual who was the sole breadwinner for his family. The tragic accident has cast a pall of gloom over the Kulai area, with villagers gathering at his residence to console the grieving family.
Authorities are expected to conduct an inquiry into the circumstances that led to the accident, while the local administration has assured necessary assistance to the bereaved family.
