Agartala:Sept 29: The West Tripura district administration has announced stringent measures to ensure a peaceful Durga Puja celebration this year. Several restrictions have been imposed across the district, and permission for the Uddichi Club’s puja in the capital has been denied due to allegations of extortion and assault.
In a press conference held at the West Tripura SP’s office on Sunday, District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar and West Tripura SP Kiran Kumar K provided detailed information about the measures. Dr. Kumar stated that two to three cases related to Durga Puja have been filed at the police station so far, and strict action will be taken against the organizers of those pujas. They will not be allowed to organize pujas this year.
Dr. Kumar also mentioned that several political parties have announced programs in the commercial areas of Agartala city. These parties are being informed to vacate these areas to allow the general public to enjoy Durga Puja without disruption. The administration is urging political parties to prioritize the joy of Puja and avoid causing any harm to businesses. Additionally, he warned against creating confusion by posting or sharing information about unrest in Bangladesh on social media, as it may affect Durga Puja celebrations.
Given recent incidents, the administration is increasing vigilance. A helpline number will be launched to report any incidents during the puja days immediately.
District Police Superintendent Kiran Kumar K reported that the situation arising from the idol-breaking incident in Rani Bazar in August has been normalized by the police. Last year, 889 Durga Pujas were organized in West Tripura district, and this year, more than 900 are expected. So far, 248 puja applications have been submitted to the administration. Meetings have been held at the subdivisional level to ensure a peaceful Durga Puja, with a district-level meeting yet to be held. Representatives of various clubs and administrative officials will soon hold this meeting.
To ensure a peaceful celebration, 30 CCTV cameras will be installed, 25 drop gates will be set up, and 60 police assistant booths will be established. Approximately 1300 TSR jawans will be on security duty. The administration has instructed that no extortion should take place this year, especially considering the losses many people suffered due to the devastating floods in August.
Among the extortion cases filed with the police, one involves the Uddichi Club puja. Following the complaint, the administration denied permission for the Uddichi Club puja, and two organizers have been issued notices. The extortion allegations against the Apnajan Club in South Agartala have been resolved amicably.
The District Police Superintendent emphasized that the atmosphere of joy during Durga Puja will not be allowed to be disturbed. The effectiveness of the administration’s strict measures remains to be seen.
