Agartala: August 27: A violent clash erupted in Boxnagar over the appointment of the Panchayat head and deputy head, leading to injuries to two women. The incident occurred in the presence of the local MLA, Tofazzal Hossain, who is alleged to have been involved in the assault of a Panchayat member and her family.

Regarding the incident, MLA Tofazzal Hossain stated that the appointment of the Panchayat head and deputy head will be made as per the party’s decision. He further added that nothing will happen outside the party’s decision.

It is customary for elected Panchayat members to propose names for the Panchayat head and deputy head. The individual who receives the majority of votes from the elected members becomes the chairperson. A similar event took place in Veluarchar Panchayat of Boxnagar on Tuesday.

A ruling party worker, describing the incident, said that a swearing-in ceremony for the Panchayat members of Boxnagar RD Block was held today. Initially, it was decided to appoint Minati Sarkar Deb, a resident of Aulkar, as the Panchayat head. Their MLA, Tofazzal Hossain, had assured her that she would definitely get the post after the election. However, after the swearing-in ceremony, Mani Barman’s name was proposed for the post, which was later approved by the MLA. This incident led to the dispute. They allege that the local MLA has betrayed them. During the ensuing chaos, Minati Sarkar Deb, along with another woman leader of the women’s organization, was injured. They were quickly taken to the hospital for advanced treatment.

Meanwhile, the police rushed to the scene. The police informed that the two injured were taken to Bishalgarh Hospital. After primary treatment, they were shifted to Tripura Medical College Hospital. Subsequently, BJP workers and supporters blocked the main road in Boxnagar area demanding the resignation of the local MLA. The police are talking to the protesters.

MLA Tofazzal Hossain stated that whoever the party decides will be appointed as the head and deputy head. Nothing will happen outside the party’s decision. However, the local people opposed the party’s decision. Due to this incident, a clash broke out between two groups at the swearing-in ceremony. But he assured that necessary steps will be taken to normalize the situation.
