The Essence of Garia Puja

Garia Puja is an important festival for the people of Tripura, especially the ethnic tribal communities. It begins on the last day of the Chaitra month and continues until the seventh day of Vaisakha, lasting for seven days and nights. The festival is also known by other names such as Sangrain, Buisu, Bihu, Busy, and Boisabi. During this period, a bamboo pole adorned with flowers and garlands symbolizes Lord Garia, the lord of the household, wealth, and livestock.

 Rituals and Customs

The rituals of Garia Puja are deeply rooted in the traditions and beliefs of the local communities. The main ingredients required for the puja include cotton thread, rice, riccha, fowl chick, rice beer, wine, earthen pots, and eggs. The fowls and eggs are sacrificed during the festival as symbols of fertility and to please the deity. The priest, known as the Ochai, conducts the rituals and forecasts the coming year based on the offerings and sacrifices made.

One of the unique aspects of Garia Puja is the prohibition against crossing the shadow of the symbolic god, Garia, to avoid angering him. This rule is strictly followed during the festival, highlighting the deep reverence the people have for their deity. Children play a significant role in the celebrations, performing drumming, singing, and dancing to appease Lord Garia.

The Garia Dance

A major attraction of the festival is the Garia dance, performed by young boys and girls. This traditional dance involves a group of dancers carrying a long-decorated bamboo pole symbolizing Lord Garia and placing it in the middle of the courtyard. The dancers chant religious hymns and songs, performing intricate dance moves around the bamboo pole. The dance form originally had 108 mudras (gestures), though some have been forgotten over time due to cultural changes.

 The Carnival Atmosphere

Garia Puja is not just a religious festival; it also has a carnival-like atmosphere. A vibrant fair is organized, showcasing the culture and traditions of Tripura. The fair includes various stalls selling local handicrafts, traditional food, and games. It is a time for community bonding, where people come together to celebrate, irrespective of their social and economic backgrounds.

 Legends and Folklore

Like many ancient festivals, Garia Puja is steeped in legends and folklore. One such legend explains that the bamboo pole represents Lord Garia, who ensures livestock, peace, children, and wealth for the devotees. Garia Puja is thus akin to the worship of Mother Shasthi, who is believed to bless mothers with children. This connection highlights the syncretic nature of the festival, blending animistic and Hindu traditions.
