Agartala: Sept 19: On Thursday, the Tripura Journalists’ Union submitted a memorandum to the Governor, seeking intervention in the delayed trials of the murders of journalists Sudip Dutta Bhowmik and Shantanu Bhowmik, which occurred in 2017. The delegation highlighted that despite the passage of time, the perpetrators have not been brought to justice. They noted that individuals involved in Sudip Dutta Bhowmik’s murder have been granted bail, while the investigation into Shantanu Bhowmik’s murder has not progressed significantly.

The Union expressed dissatisfaction with the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) handling of the cases. They recalled that following the murders, a delegation had met with the then President of India and the Union Home Minister, submitting a memorandum. However, despite the CBI taking over the investigation, there has been little progress.

The Governor assured the delegation that necessary steps would be taken. The Union indicated that they might approach the Union Home Minister again if required and announced plans for a larger movement demanding swift and exemplary punishment for those responsible for the murders.

The delegation included Joint Secretary Abhishek De, Advisor Syed Sajjad Ali, President Pranab Sarkar, General Secretary Alok Ghosh, and others. The death anniversary of Shantanu Bhowmik will be observed tomorrow, with a candlelight vigil at 5 pm in front of Rabindra Bhavan to commemorate his memory.
