Agartala: August 25: Following heavy rainfall on 21st and 22nd August, a flood situation emerged across the state. In response, the Chief Minister convened an all-party meeting on Saturday evening. Representing the Pradesh Congress, Pradesh Congress President Ashish Kumar Saha and MLA Sudip Roy Barman attended the meeting. The issues raised by the Congress representatives were later announced by MLA Sudip Roy Barman during a press conference at the Pradesh Congress office on Sunday.
Barman stated that several constructive proposals were put forward during the all-party meeting for the benefit of the state’s residents. Firstly, it was questioned whether the Indian Meteorological Department had informed the Tripura government about the heavy rainfall and, if so, why the public was not adequately warned. It was demanded that strict action be taken against any negligence in this regard. Secondly, based on past experiences, it was proposed that state-level, assembly-level, district-level, and subdivision-level committees be formed to ensure that no affected person is deprived or subjected to partisanship or corruption. Thirdly, it was suggested that the state government prepare a preliminary estimate of the damages, including a survey to determine the extent of damage to various departments. All political parties would then approach the Union Home Minister to request the necessary funds.
Additionally, it was demanded that the government provide easy ways for individuals to recover damaged government documents. It was also suggested that unemployed individuals who had taken loans to set up businesses be given a grace period of five to six months. Furthermore, a ban on the use of flex by political parties and various institutions, as well as the use of plastic bottles, was proposed, citing these as major causes of floods. Barman emphasized that the Chief Minister should consider these matters seriously.
During the press conference, Barman also criticized the state’s two MPs for their absence during this difficult time, stating that people had high expectations from them, which were not met. Pradesh Congress President Ashish Kumar Saha was also present at the press conference.
