Agartala: Dec 23:  Pradesh Congress spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty claimed that Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement about Tripura floating in the sea of development while hiding real facts was misleading. The Congress had hoped that the recently concluded North-East Council (NEC) meeting, attended by Chief Ministers and Governors from the eight northeastern states under Shah’s leadership, would play an effective role in addressing various issues. However, Chakraborty pointed out that there was no significant outcome, and instead, Shah’s visit, which spanned two days, was marked by claims that Tripura had surpassed even other developed states in terms of development, law and order, and good governance.

Shah also praised the state’s annual average income, stating it had reached 1.77 lakh rupees, while ignoring the hardships faced by farmers. Chakraborty reminded that during the devastating floods of August, the central government did not provide assistance to the farmers. Moreover, Shah’s claim that the state’s agricultural income would increase thirty-fold within two to three years was also criticized as unrealistic.

The Congress leader further condemned Shah’s statement that 87% of the population now has access to drinking water in Tripura, pointing out frequent protests over water shortages. He accused the “Jal Jeevan Mission” as a failed project, citing the discrepancy in funding and implementation.

Chakraborty also criticized the lack of media participation in the NEC meeting and raised concerns about the financial growth of certain sections of society, particularly those linked to illegal activities, under the current government’s rule. As part of their ongoing campaigns, the Congress announced plans for several events, including sending memorandums to the President on December 24 to honor Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and celebrating key dates such as Mahatma Gandhi’s 100th anniversary in Congress leadership and the 140th founding day of the Indian National Congress on December 28.
