Padmasree Thanga Darlong breathes his last

Agartala: Dec 03: Thanga Darlong, the pride of the state passed away. He was an Indian folk singer, was awarded the Padma Shree in 2019 from Tripura. He passed away this morning. He was 103 years old at the time of his death. He was suffering from chronic diseases for a long time. He breathed his last at his home in Kailasahar this morning.

It may be noted that Thanga Darlong was born on July 20, 1920 in Marui village under Gaurnagar RD block in Kailash. He was known for his contribution to folk music and his work in preserving and promoting the traditional instrument rasem. In 2019, he was awarded the Padma Shree, India’s fourth highest civilian award.

He also received the Sangeet Nataka Academy Award in 2014, the highest Indian recognition given to practicing artistes. In 2015, he was awarded the Academic Fellowship Award. In 2016, he was also awarded the state-level Vyoshresta honor and centenary award. He passed away at his home this afternoon.

His glorious contribution to folk culture will always be remembered with respect by the people of Tripura, above all the entire country.
