Agartala: Jan 10: During the winter session of the Tripura Assembly, Congress MLA Gopal Roy caused a stir by demanding an extension of the session. Roy’s protest, which included going into the well of the House, did not result in any changes, and the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) report was passed by voice vote.

On Friday, opposition parties CPI(M) and Congress called for an extension of the winter session, arguing that the limited time prevented them from discussing important issues affecting the people. Senior Congress MLA Gopal Chandra Roy requested the Speaker to extend the sixth session of the 13th Assembly by at least two days, but his request was denied.

Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath explained that the session was kept short because all party representatives in the BAC meeting had agreed that the budget session would be longer. He assured opposition members that sufficient time would be allocated in the budget session to discuss all departmental issues.

Opposition leader Jitendra Chowdhury emphasized that if members are not given the opportunity to discuss all departmental issues, the government would miss the chance to highlight its achievements. He also noted that the Lok Sabha Speaker and the Rajya Sabha Chairman have recommended longer assembly sessions for smaller states like Tripura, suggesting that the state should have at least 60 days of session.
