Agartala: In the heart of Agartala city, a grand spectacle unfolded as thousands of devoted locals gathered to partake in the extraordinary Mayer Gomon carnival, a hallmark of the Durga Puja season. This unique cultural extravaganza involved a vibrant procession of idols from all the major community Puja organizers, leading them to the immersion ghats along the banks of the River Haora.

The entire city transformed into a vibrant tapestry of festivities, with its streets adorned by a profusion of colorful lights. Traditional drummers, known as Dhaki, provided rhythmic beats that set the mood, while women dressed in their traditional attire swayed to the tunes. The air was filled with high-energy, peppy music emanating from sound systems.

Crowds lined both sides of the streets, eager to revel in the vivacious cultural performances showcased by artists hired by various local clubs. Meanwhile, it was a demanding day for the police force, officials from the Information and Cultural Affairs Department, and the diligent staff of the Agartala Municipal Corporation as they worked tirelessly to manage the proceedings.

Dr. Manik Saha, the Chief Minister, inaugurated the procession of the idols and emphasized the significance of such events as a means of cultural exchange among different communities. He fondly reminisced about the times when all the Puja organizers in Agartala used to collectively immerse the Durga idols through a grand procession in the city. Over time, this practice had faded, and each organizer conducted standalone immersion processions. However, with the ascent of his government, the idea of a carnival was born and the tradition was resurrected. Dr. Saha credited the Information and Cultural Affairs Department and the Agartala Municipal Corporation for their pivotal roles in this revival.

Dr. Saha viewed such occasions as a medium for cultural exchange, emphasizing the importance of religious festivals in enhancing cultural understanding among communities, ultimately fostering unity among them. He noted the proliferation of new Pujas in recent years, which had seamlessly woven into the city’s social fabric, further strengthening the bonds between different groups.

In addition to the Chief Minister, dignitaries such as Mayor Dipak Majumder, Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, BJP state president Rajib Bhattacharjee, Minister Santana Chakma, Tinku Roy, Chief Secretary JK Sinha, and DGP Amitabha Ranjan graced the event with their presence.

To ensure the safety and security of the event, a multi-layered security plan was meticulously executed throughout the city. More than 200 TSR personnel were deployed for security, with an additional 60 CRPF personnel stationed at various key points to monitor the crowds. The city was divided into 11 sectors, each overseen by a DSP or an inspector-level officer, all working together to guarantee a safe and joyful celebration for everyone.
