Agartala: August 23: Due to incessant heavy rainfall in the state since August 19th, a flood situation has arisen. The southern, Gomati, Unokoti, and West Tripura districts have been the most affected by the floods. The highest rainfall of 70 mm in the last 24 hours was recorded in Sonamura sub-division. The Chief Minister is personally monitoring the flood situation. On Friday, the Chief Minister visited relief camps in Khilpara of Gomati district and Shantirbazar sub-division of South Tripura district. Except for the Gomati river in Sonamura, the water level in other rivers has gone below the danger mark.
So far, 558 relief camps have been opened across the state, providing shelter to more than 128,000 people. The district administration has arranged food and medical facilities in these relief camps. Communication systems have been damaged in some places but have been restored in many areas.
As of now, 24 people have died across the state, with 2 people missing and 2 injured. There has been extensive damage to electricity, agriculture, and people’s homes. The process of assessing the damage has begun, with initial estimates suggesting damages worth more than 5 billion rupees.
On Friday, the Revenue Secretary, Brijesh Pandey, addressed a press conference at the State Emergency Operation Center adjacent to the NCC thana and provided this information. He further informed that rescue operations are still ongoing in Gomati and South Tripura districts, with 6 teams of NDRF and 6 teams of SDRF actively involved. More than 11,000 food packets have already been distributed, and food distribution will continue on Saturday as many people are still stranded.
The Revenue Secretary also mentioned that there are currently 11 teams of NDRF and 32 teams of SDRF in the state. Among others, the Secretary of the Power Department, Abhishek Singh, and the Secretary of the Public Works Department, Kiran Gitte, were present at the press conference.
