In a significant move towards strengthening inclusive healthcare delivery, Ashvini Netralaya has launched a dedicated Patient Transport Unit (PTU) to provide free transportation for patients from remote and underserved areas of Tripura. The initiative aims to remove financial and logistical barriers that often prevent patients from accessing timely eye screening and surgical services.
The PTU was formally inaugurated at Ashvini Netralaya’s hospital premises by Dr. Anurag Majumdar, Chairman and CEO of Ashvini Eye Care Pvt. Ltd. The project has been spearheaded by Dr. Subhankar Debnath, Head of Community Partnerships, as part of the institution’s broader mission to eliminate avoidable blindness across the state. The initiative is aligned with national and state health insurance schemes, including Ayushman Bharat–Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) and the Chief Minister Jan Arogya Yojana (CMJAY).
Designed with a strong focus on patient safety and comfort, the newly launched PTU is fully air-conditioned and equipped with Automatic Fire Detection systems, GPS tracking, and multiple emergency evacuation exits. These features make the vehicle especially suitable for elderly patients and those with visual impairments who require safe and comfortable travel.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Majumdar highlighted the challenges faced by patients from distant locations. “Although many patients are eligible for free treatment under government schemes, travel costs and distance often prevent them from reaching hospitals. This transport unit bridges that critical gap and ensures equitable access to eye care,” he said. He also announced plans to gradually expand the transport fleet and introduce mobile eye clinics over the next three to five years to reach every corner of Tripura.
Dr. Debnath emphasized the community-focused approach of the initiative, stating that the PTU will operate in close coordination with outreach eye camps, primary health centres, and local health workers. “No one should lose their eyesight simply because they cannot travel. This unit ensures timely access to screenings, surgeries, and post-operative care,” he said.
Primarily serving patients identified during outreach programmes, the PTU will facilitate travel for cataract surgeries, diagnostic tests, and other ophthalmic treatments covered under AB-PMJAY and CMJAY. With this initiative, Ashvini Netralaya has further strengthened its role as a key partner in Tripura’s public health system, reaffirming its commitment to accessible, affordable, and quality eye care for all.
