Agartala: April 06: The Agartala Press Club held its much-anticipated election on Sunday, marking a significant moment for the local media community. Senior journalist Pranab Sarkar was elected as the new president, ushering in a fresh leadership for the club. Meanwhile, senior photojournalist Ramakanta Dey secured his re-election as the Secretary, maintaining his influential role within the club. Dey, who had earned widespread support, triumphed by securing 153 votes, defeating his opponent Biswendu Bhattacharjee of the ‘United Progressive’ panel.
The ‘United Progressive’ panel, despite the loss in the secretary race, managed to secure five out of the 11 available posts. Senior journalist Chitra Roy emerged victorious in the vice president race, while Kamal Chowdhury and Abhishek Dey were re-elected as Assistant Secretaries. Ranjan Roy also retained his position as Treasurer. The newly elected executive members include Mihir Lal Sarkar, Abhishek Debbarma, Biswajit Dey, Santosh Gope, and Ranjit Debbarma, each bringing their unique expertise to the table.
The election was conducted under the supervision of Advocate Sandip Datta Chowdhury, the Returning Officer, who announced the results following the vote count on Sunday evening. Several prominent figures, such as Jayanta Bhattacharjee, Arun Nath, Prabir Sil, Sajjad Ali, and Sourajit Paul, faced defeat in their respective races for president, vice president, and assistant secretary positions.
This election took place alongside the annual general conference of the Press Club, reflecting the vibrant engagement of the Agartala media fraternity in shaping the future of the club. The election results signal a new phase for the Agartala Press Club, with an experienced team at the helm ready to lead the organization forward.
