Accused sentenced two year jail for raping minor

Agartala: June 14: In a significant development, the Honorable District Special POCSO Court in Khowai has sentenced a 65-year-old man to two years in jail for raping a seven-year-old girl. The court also imposed a fine of fifty thousand Rs, with an additional six months of imprisonment in default of payment.

According to the incident report, on April 19, 2021, the minor girl visited a neighbor’s house in the 36-mile area under Mungiakami police station. The neighbor, Brajendra Debbarma (65), lured her to his home and committed the heinous act. The girl later confided in her mother, who promptly sought medical attention for her.

The minor’s father filed a written complaint against Brajendra Debbarma at the Mungiakami police station, leading to the arrest of the accused. Subsequently, the police conducted an investigation and filed a charge sheet in court on July 31, 2021. During the trial, fourteen witnesses testified for the government, resulting in the conviction of Brajendra Debbarma by the Honorable Court.

Today, Judge Bet Pratim Debbarma of the Special POCSO Court ordered the accused to serve two years in prison under Section 6 of the POCSO Act. Lawyers Abhijit Bhattacharjee and Ajit Sarkar represented the government in this case.
