Agartala: Feb 15: In a significant development, several key leaders from the Congress party in South Tripura district have crossed over to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The defections include five block Congress presidents, one PCC member, and the district president of the OBC Congress. The move was formalized during a gathering at BJP state president Shankar Roy’s residence in Sabroom.
Addressing the occasion, Roy highlighted the historical animosity between the Congress and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) in the state. He asserted that the Congress’s recent electoral alliance with the CPM in Delhi had not been well-received by party workers in Tripura. “The CPM-Congress alliance is unacceptable to our cadre,” Roy stated.
This political shift deals a severe blow to the Congress in South Tripura, a region traditionally considered a stronghold of the CPM. With the party already grappling with internal challenges, these defections are likely to further weaken its position in the state. The Congress now faces the daunting task of rebuilding its base and regaining lost ground.
