African swine flu: Tripura government bans transport of pigs from outside the state and within the state

Agartala, November 4: African Swine Fever has taken hold in Tripura. The Animal Resources Development Department has banned the transportation of pigs from outside the state to the state and within the state.

Sasikumar, Special Secretary and Director of Animal Resources Development Department, informed this news in a circular and said that this ban has been issued for the welfare of pig farmers and to prevent infection among pigs.

 

According to the notification, no live or dead pig can be brought into the state from outside the state without the approval of the Department of Animal Resources Development, Government of Tripura. Only those vehicles or rail consignments carrying pigs from outside will be allowed to enter the State in compliance with Rule 16 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960, Transport of Animals Rules 2001 and Standard Operating Procedures.

 

The notification also said that in that case the Animal Resource Development Department officials will verify the required health and vaccination status of imported pigs. Therefore, at least 48 hours prior to the arrival of the consignment containing pigs at the port of entry, the Director of Animal Resources Development should be notified. Apart from pig rearing, pigs cannot be brought from outside for selling meat for commercial reasons.

Moreover, the importer will have the health check of the pig at his own expense at the place where the pig will go, based on the advance notice of the Animal Development Department. If any illegal at the entrance of the state. Importer shall have sole responsibility to remove consignment of hogs from the State if diseased consignment is found. Otherwise he shall at his own cost dispose of those pigs in accordance with the prevailing disease prevention laws.
