Agartala, Nov 6:The Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) has increased its postgraduate MD and MS seats from 95 to 153 for the 2026-27 academic session, adding 58 seats across 16 specialised disciplines, Chief Minister Manik Saha said on Friday.
Describing the expansion as a significant milestone in Tripura’s medical education sector, Saha said the increased intake capacity would provide more opportunities for aspiring doctors from the state and other parts of the country to pursue specialised medical training.
He said strengthening postgraduate medical education was essential for developing a skilled workforce of specialist doctors who could serve in hospitals, medical colleges and healthcare institutions across Tripura.
The chief minister said the expansion would also contribute to improving healthcare delivery by increasing the availability of trained specialists in different branches of medicine.
The enhanced capacity is expected to benefit medical graduates seeking higher education within the state, reducing the need for many aspiring doctors to move to other parts of the country for postgraduate studies.
Saha attributed the achievement to the continued support of the Centre and expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J P Nadda for their assistance in strengthening medical education and healthcare infrastructure in Tripura.
He said sustained investment in medical education and healthcare facilities was crucial for building a stronger and more resilient healthcare system.
The chief minister emphasised that increasing postgraduate seats would have long-term benefits, as doctors receiving specialised training within the state could contribute to improving medical services in government hospitals and other healthcare institutions.
The expansion comes amid efforts to strengthen medical education infrastructure in the northeastern state and improve access to specialised healthcare services.
With the latest addition, AGMC has taken another step towards expanding its academic capacity and producing more specialist doctors to meet the growing healthcare requirements of Tripura.
The increase in postgraduate seats is also expected to strengthen the state’s position as a medical education destination in the Northeast, while creating additional opportunities for young medical graduates.
The development is part of the broader efforts to strengthen the state’s healthcare infrastructure through improved medical education, specialised training and availability of qualified medical professionals.
