Agartala, October 4: A 3.8-magnitude earthquake jolted Tripura’s Dhalai district in the early hours of Sunday, with tremors felt in parts of the district but no immediate reports of casualties or damage, officials said.
The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) said the earthquake occurred at 12:57:38 am and was centred at latitude 23.757 degrees North and longitude 91.995 degrees East.
The quake originated at a depth of 30 kilometres, according to the NCS.
The tremor was felt in several parts of Dhalai, briefly alarming residents. However, there were no immediate reports of injuries, damage to buildings or disruption to essential services, officials said.
The district administration has begun monitoring the situation and collecting information from different locations to assess whether the earthquake caused any damage, particularly in remote and rural areas.
Residents have been advised to remain cautious and follow safety measures in case of further tremors or aftershocks.
The earthquake occurred in the seismically active northeastern region, which frequently records tremors of varying intensity.
The NCS, India’s nodal agency for monitoring earthquakes, operates a network of seismic stations across the country and records seismic activity in India and neighbouring regions.
It releases information on earthquakes, including their magnitude, location, depth and time of occurrence.
Officials said there was no indication of significant damage in Dhalai during the initial assessment.
The administration has asked residents to remain calm and avoid spreading or believing unverified information on social media.
Officials are continuing to monitor reports from different parts of the district and will assess any fresh information regarding the impact of the tremor.
The earthquake lasted only briefly, and the situation remained normal after the shaking subsided, officials said.
The latest tremor has once again highlighted the need for preparedness in Tripura and other northeastern states, which are located in a seismically active zone.
Authorities have advised residents to remain aware of basic earthquake safety measures and follow instructions issued by the administration during any emergency.
There have been no reports so far of major structural damage, casualties or disruption of public services following Sunday’s earthquake.
Further updates will be issued if any significant impact is reported during the ongoing assessment, officials said.
