Agartala, October 1: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Thursday paid tribute to legendary singer and composer Kumar Sachin Dev Burman on his birth anniversary, describing him as the “face of Tripura” and an enduring source of pride for the state.
Addressing a commemorative programme at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan here, Saha said Burman’s contribution to Indian music transcended generations and remained an important part of the country’s cultural heritage.
The chief minister said the people of Tripura should not limit themselves to remembering the legendary artiste on his birth anniversary but should work towards preserving and popularising his musical legacy.
“It is not enough to simply remember him. We must honour him by keeping his creations alive and carrying forward his legacy,” Saha said.
He also recalled the historical connection of the venue with Burman, noting that the building had once been his residence.
Saha said Burman, despite belonging to the Manikya royal family, moved away from the privileges associated with his background and established an identity of his own through his dedication, perseverance and artistic talent.
Born on October 1, 1906, at Chartha in Comilla, then part of the Kingdom of Tripura, Burman received his early musical training from his father, Nabadwip Chandra Dev Burman, a noted sitar player.
His music was influenced by folk traditions and classical forms, with his compositions drawing inspiration from Bengal’s rivers, rural life and ordinary people, Saha said.
Burman started his career in Bengali music before making a mark in Hindi cinema. He was associated with All India Radio and Hindustan Records and contributed to several acclaimed films, including “Devdas”, “Guide”, “Jewel Thief” and “Abhimaan”.
His son, Rahul Dev Burman, popularly known as Pancham, later became a prominent Hindi film composer, carrying forward the family’s musical tradition.
Saha also recalled Burman’s reported association with the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, saying his songs broadcast through Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra inspired freedom fighters during the conflict.
Burman was honoured with several awards, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Filmfare Awards, the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer and the Padma Shri.
The programme was organised by the State Department of Information and Cultural Affairs.
Secretary Kiran Gitte, Director Bimbisar Bhattacharjee, senior officials and other dignitaries attended the event. Students of the State Music College presented Burman’s songs as part of the commemorative programme.
