Agartala, September 21: A police patrol in the College Tilla area led to the arrest of two youths and the seizure of 18 kilograms of cannabis late Saturday night, East Agartala Police Station officials said.
The patrol team was conducting surveillance near the College Tilla Lake embankment when the movements of the two youths reportedly raised suspicion. Police stopped them and carried out a search, during which the cannabis was recovered.
The suspects were taken to East Agartala Police Station along with the seized contraband. Police subsequently registered a case against them under relevant provisions of law.
Officer-in-Charge Krishnadhan Sarkar confirmed the recovery and arrests, saying the action was carried out during routine patrolling in the area.
Police have since launched a detailed investigation into the consignment. Officials are seeking to ascertain the source of the cannabis, its intended destination and the circumstances under which it was being transported.
Investigators are also examining whether the two arrested youths were allegedly working for others and whether the seizure has any connection with a wider narcotics supply chain.
As part of the probe, police are attempting to establish the route through which the consignment was brought into the area and identify any other persons who may have been involved.
The seizure comes amid continued police surveillance in Agartala and neighbouring areas to prevent the movement of narcotic substances. Patrolling has been intensified at locations where authorities consider regular monitoring necessary.
Police said the investigation would determine whether additional action or arrests are required in the case. Further details are expected to emerge as the probe progresses.
The authorities have reiterated that surveillance and enforcement measures will continue to check narcotics trafficking and curb the illegal movement of drugs in the capital and its adjoining areas.
