India has lost one of its most respected educationists, institution builders and public figures with the passing of Padma Shri Dr. Dnyandeo Yashwantrao (D. Y.) Patil, former Governor of Tripura, Bihar and West Bengal. He died in Kolhapur on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at the age of 90 due to age-related health complications, bringing to an end a remarkable life dedicated to education, public service and philanthropy.
Born on October 22, 1935, Dr. Patil transformed India’s higher education landscape through his vision and commitment to expanding access to quality learning. He was honoured with the Padma Shri in 1991 in recognition of his outstanding contributions to education and society. Under his leadership, the D. Y. Patil Group grew into one of India’s largest educational networks, comprising more than 182 educational institutions and seven deemed universities, nurturing thousands of students across the country.
Apart from his achievements in education, Dr. Patil also enjoyed a distinguished career in public life. He served as a Member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly before being appointed Governor of Tripura (2009–2013). He later held gubernatorial responsibilities in Bihar and West Bengal. During his tenure in Tripura, he was widely appreciated for promoting higher education, encouraging academic excellence and supporting initiatives aimed at expanding opportunities for young people.
Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha led the tributes from Tripura, describing Dr. Patil as a visionary institution builder and philanthropist. In a social media post, he said Dr. Patil’s immense contributions to education, healthcare and public service would continue to inspire generations, adding, “May his soul rest in peace.”
Condolences have poured in from political leaders, academics, former students and citizens across the country. Many remembered Dr. Patil as a pioneering educationist who combined visionary leadership with compassion and public service.
His passing marks the end of an era in Indian education. The institutions he built and the values he championed will continue to shape the lives of countless students, ensuring that his legacy endures for generations to come.
