Agartala, July 21: Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Tuesday paid glowing tributes to Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag, describing his untimely death as an “irreparable loss” to the state and the police force. The Chief Minister said Tripura had lost an honest, efficient and dedicated officer whose commitment to public safety and law enforcement would always be remembered.

Anurag, a 1994-batch IPS officer of the Tripura cadre, was found hanging under mysterious circumstances in the bathroom attached to his official chamber at the State Police Headquarters in Agartala on Monday. Police have registered an unnatural death case, and an investigation is underway. Preliminary post-mortem findings indicate that the death was caused by hanging.

Speaking to the media after paying floral tributes to the late police chief, Dr. Saha said Anurag exemplified integrity, professionalism, courage and unwavering dedication throughout his distinguished career. “His commitment to ensuring public safety and maintaining law and order earned him immense respect from colleagues and citizens alike. The state has lost an honest, dutiful and public-spirited police officer,” he said.

The Chief Minister, who also holds the Home portfolio, recalled meeting Anurag during the Tripura Police Passing Out Parade on July 18 and said the DGP had appeared cheerful and in good spirits. He credited Anurag’s leadership with significantly improving the state’s law and order situation and said he always felt reassured knowing the police force was under his command.

Expressing condolences to the bereaved family, Dr. Saha prayed for strength to help them cope with the tragedy. He said Anurag’s legacy of duty, compassion and selfless public service would continue to inspire future generations of police personnel.

Tripura Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu, Cabinet ministers, Chief Secretary J.K. Sinha, Home Secretary Abhishek Singh, acting DGP G.S. Rao, senior civil servants and police officials also paid their last respects during homage ceremonies held at the Police Headquarters and the State Civil Secretariat.

The state government observed one-day state mourning in honour of the late DGP. Following the tribute ceremonies, Anurag’s mortal remains were flown to his native place in Baraut, Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat district, where his last rites are scheduled to be performed on Wednesday. Anurag had assumed charge as Tripura’s Director General of Police on May 17, 2025, after previously serving as DGP (Intelligence).
