Agartala, July 16: Tripura Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma has urged the Delhi government to allot land for the construction of dedicated hostels for Scheduled Tribe (ST) students from Tripura pursuing higher education in the National Capital.

During a meeting with Delhi Lieutenant Governor Tarunjit Singh Sandhu, who also serves as the Chairman of the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), the Minister submitted a Demi-Official (D.O.) letter requesting the allotment of suitable land for establishing a 100-seater Boys’ Hostel and a 100-seater Girls’ Hostel.

The proposed hostels are intended to provide safe, affordable and comfortable residential accommodation for tribal students who travel from Tripura to Delhi for higher education. According to the Minister, the initiative will significantly reduce the difficulties faced by students from remote and economically weaker backgrounds in securing suitable accommodation while pursuing academic and professional courses.

Speaking after the meeting, Debbarma reiterated the Tripura Government’s commitment to promoting education and ensuring the welfare of tribal communities.

“The Government of Tripura remains steadfast in its commitment to expanding educational opportunities and safeguarding the interests of our tribal youth. These hostels will help overcome the challenges faced by students coming from distant and remote regions of the state, enabling them to pursue higher education with confidence, security and dignity,” he said.

The Minister said the proposal is part of the state government’s broader vision of empowering tribal communities through education and creating better opportunities for students seeking quality education outside the state.

He added that the availability of dedicated hostel facilities in Delhi would not only ease the financial burden on students and their families but also provide a secure and supportive environment conducive to academic excellence.

Debbarma expressed optimism that the Delhi Lieutenant Governor and the Delhi Development Authority would consider the proposal favourably and facilitate the allotment of land at the earliest.

If approved, the project is expected to benefit generations of tribal students from Tripura by ensuring access to quality accommodation in Delhi, thereby strengthening educational opportunities and supporting the state’s efforts towards inclusive development, educational empowerment and social welfare.
