Agartala, July 14: In a unique initiative aimed at reducing road accidents and promoting safer roads, the Tripura Traffic Police has launched free eye-testing camps for drivers across the state. The programme seeks to identify vision-related problems among drivers and provide timely corrective measures to improve road safety.

The first camp was inaugurated on Tuesday at Nazrul Kalakshetra in Agartala by Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar, IPS. The initiative is open to drivers of both government and private vehicles.

According to officials, drivers undergoing eye examinations and found to have vision impairments will be provided spectacles free of cost. The expenses will be borne jointly by the Traffic Police and Prayas, the community policing initiative of Tripura Police.

Speaking at the inauguration, DGP Dhankar said reducing road accidents remains one of the top priorities of the state police. He highlighted that Tripura has witnessed a decline in road accidents, with cases dropping from 578 in 2024 to 527 in 2025.

He attributed the improvement to an integrated road safety strategy based on the “Four Es”—Education, Enforcement, Emergency Care and Engineering.

“The decline in accident cases has been possible because all stakeholders are working together on these four key pillars. We have achieved encouraging results and will continue to strengthen these efforts,” the DGP said.

West District Traffic Superintendent of Police Kanta Jahangir said good eyesight is essential for safe driving and that undetected vision problems are often a contributing factor in road accidents. She said the camps would not only help identify vision defects but also create greater awareness among drivers about the importance of regular eye check-ups.

Officials believe the initiative will contribute significantly to accident prevention while encouraging responsible driving practices.

The programme has been welcomed by drivers and road safety advocates, who described it as a practical and people-centric initiative reflecting Tripura Police’s commitment to citizen welfare and safer roads.

Authorities said similar eye-testing camps will soon be organised in other districts, further strengthening the state’s road safety campaign and ensuring that drivers across Tripura have access to free vision screening and corrective support.
