Agartala, May 21: In a major anti-narcotics operation, Teliamura police seized a large quantity of banned “Eskuf” cough syrup from an abandoned vehicle during a late-night raid, recovering contraband valued at over Rs 4 lakh. The incident has once again raised concerns over the alleged movement of illegal substances in the region.

According to police sources, the operation was conducted on Wednesday night as part of intensified efforts to crack down on drug trafficking and prevent the spread of narcotics-related activities in the area.

A mobile patrol team led by Sub-Inspector Sampa Das was carrying out routine surveillance and checking operations in the Maharani Pur area under Teliamura Police Station when officers noticed a suspicious vehicle parked in an isolated condition along the roadside.

The vehicle, identified as an Eco bearing registration number TR01-BV-0637, appeared to have been abandoned under unusual circumstances. Suspecting possible illegal activity, police immediately detained the vehicle and conducted a detailed search.

During the search operation, officers recovered more than 600 bottles of “Eskuf” cough syrup allegedly hidden inside the vehicle. Preliminary estimates suggest the market value of the seized consignment exceeds Rs 4 lakh.

Police officials suspect that the cough syrup was being transported illegally for trafficking purposes. Codeine phosphate-based cough syrups such as Eskuf are frequently reported to be misused as intoxicants, leading authorities to impose strict controls on their circulation and misuse.

However, the vehicle driver and owner are currently absconding. Police have launched an investigation and initiated search operations to identify and trace individuals connected to the illegal consignment. Authorities are also verifying ownership records of the seized vehicle.

The incident has renewed public concern regarding alleged drug trafficking activities in and around Teliamura. Residents have repeatedly called for stronger action against organised networks involved in narcotics and substance abuse targeting local youth.

Police confirmed that a case has been registered at Teliamura Police Station under relevant provisions of the NDPS Act, and further investigation into the matter is currently underway.
