Agartala, May 20: Tripura’s rich tradition of bamboo craftsmanship has earned national recognition as noted bamboo technologist Samir Jamatia and his team played a key role in creating handcrafted invitation kits for the prestigious “Republic Day at Home 2026” reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Their remarkable contribution not only showcased the state’s indigenous artistry on a national platform but also brought immense pride to Tripura by earning them the rare opportunity to meet the President of India.

The special project was developed under the theme Ashtalakshmi (Northeast), aimed at highlighting the unique cultural identity and traditional skills of the Northeastern states. As part of the initiative, artisans from Tripura were engaged in designing and producing exclusive handcrafted invitation kits that reflected the rich heritage and artistic excellence of the region.

Working under the supervision and guidance of Samir Jamatia, the team used traditional techniques that have been preserved and practiced by indigenous communities for generations. Three distinct methods formed the core of the design process. The first involved woven bamboo mats created in the traditional Twisting basket style associated with the Jamatia community. Another technique employed loom-based weaving using thin bamboo strips and thread to create intricate patterns. Additionally, beautifully crafted cane pendants sourced locally were incorporated into the design, adding an artistic touch to the kits.

The project also highlighted the importance of sustainable practices and the contribution of women and indigenous artisans to the local economy. Beyond being decorative pieces, the handcrafted kits symbolized the fusion of tradition and innovation, presenting Tripura’s cultural heritage to a national audience.

Minister for Tribal Welfare Bikash Debbarma congratulated Samir Jamatia and his team for the achievement, describing it as a matter of immense pride for the state. He said the recognition reflects the extraordinary talent and dedication of Tripura’s artisans and underscores the richness of the state’s cultural heritage.

The initiative has further reinforced Tripura’s identity as a center of indigenous creativity, sustainable artistry, and traditional craftsmanship capable of earning appreciation at the highest national level.
