Agartala, April 3 — Tripura’s startup ecosystem is witnessing steady growth, with the total number of ventures in the state crossing the 140 mark following the implementation of a revised startup policy, a senior official from the Information Technology department said.

Director of the IT department and head of StartUp Tripura, Jeya Ragul Geshan, noted that the new policy has significantly broadened the scope for entrepreneurs by opening up diverse sectors beyond the traditional IT and IT-enabled services.

“Earlier, the policy was largely confined to IT and allied sectors. The revised framework now recognises areas such as civil engineering, bamboo, deep tech, solar and renewable energy, along with other non-IT sectors. This has encouraged many aspiring founders to come forward with innovative ideas,” he said.

To better understand the needs of the startup community, Geshan chaired an interactive session with founders on March 30. The meeting served as a platform for entrepreneurs to share their experiences, challenges, and expectations from the government.

According to the IT department, the session focused on key aspects such as innovation, funding opportunities, incubation support, and improving market access. Officials described the dialogue as a collaborative effort to strengthen the state’s growing startup ecosystem.

Providing an overview of the current scenario, Geshan said a substantial number of startups have already benefited from incentives under the new policy. “Around 100 new startups have approached us recently. Of these, nearly 50 have been formally recognised after due screening, and about 20 have received the necessary clearances to begin operations,” he stated.

He added that over 100 startups from Tripura are currently registered with the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, reflecting the state’s increasing alignment with national startup initiatives.

The growth of startups has also contributed to employment generation, with approximately 200 individuals already engaged in these ventures.

Officials believe that with continued policy support, improved infrastructure, and access to funding, Tripura’s startup ecosystem is poised for further expansion, offering new opportunities for innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic development in the state.
