Agartala, March 26: As many as 171 nominations of candidates aspiring to contest the upcoming Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council elections have been declared valid following the scrutiny process conducted on Thursday.

Officials from the State Election Commission Tripura stated that the figures may undergo slight changes, as scrutiny of 11 nomination papers filed for the Maharani-Chelagang constituency could not be completed due to technical issues. The process for the pending constituency is scheduled to resume on Friday.

According to official sources, a total of 186 candidates submitted their nomination papers by March 25, the last date for filing nominations. However, the total number of nomination papers exceeded 200, as candidates are permitted to file up to four sets of nomination documents as per election procedures.

“The scrutiny process has been completed for all constituencies except Maharani-Chelagang. Out of the 186 candidates, 171 nominations have been found valid so far. The final figure will be confirmed once scrutiny for the remaining constituency is completed,” an official said.

Authorities further clarified that the final list of candidates contesting the elections will only be known after the withdrawal deadline, which is set for March 28. Candidates have the option to withdraw their nominations until that date.

Polling for the district council elections is scheduled to be held on April 12, while the counting of votes will take place on April 17.

More than nine lakh voters are expected to participate in the electoral exercise, making it a significant democratic event in the state. The administration is making necessary arrangements to ensure a smooth, free, and fair polling process across all constituencies.
