Agartala, February 4:
Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Wednesday emphasised that cancer is no longer an incurable disease if detected early, underscoring the need for awareness, regular check-ups and timely medical consultation. Speaking to reporters on the occasion of World Cancer Day, Dr Saha urged people not to ignore even minor abnormalities in their bodies.

The Chief Minister made the remarks while travelling by train to Kumarghat in Unakoti district, where he was scheduled to inaugurate several development projects. A maxillofacial surgeon and former medical college faculty member, Dr Saha noted that Tripura, like other northeastern states, continues to report a considerable number of cancer cases, with oral cancer being particularly prevalent.

“Earlier, people used to believe that cancer has no answer. But today, cancer does have an answer if it is diagnosed at an early stage,” he said. According to him, one of the biggest challenges in cancer treatment is that patients often seek medical help only when the disease has significantly progressed.

“Most patients come to hospitals when complications increase and symptoms become severe. If they come earlier, treatment becomes much easier and the outcomes are much better,” he explained.

Dr Saha highlighted that oral cancer is commonly seen in the region, largely due to tobacco-related habits. He also pointed out that breast cancer and cervical cancer are frequently reported, while noting that cancer can affect any part of the body.

Stressing the importance of public awareness, he said educating people about early signs and symptoms can save lives. “If any abnormality is noticed, people should immediately consult a doctor. Early examination is extremely important,” he advised.

He added that doctors can confirm cancer at an early stage through diagnostic tests such as biopsies, following which treatment options like surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy are available.

Reiterating his appeal on World Cancer Day, the Chief Minister urged citizens to prioritise health and seek timely medical attention, stating that early diagnosis remains the most effective tool in the fight against cancer.
