Agartala, Nov 11 — In a disturbing incident that has raised serious concerns over hospital security, two youths were arrested for allegedly assaulting a doctor and a nurse on duty at the female medicine ward of GB Hospital on Monday evening.
According to police reports, the altercation began with a dispute over a wheelchair and quickly escalated into physical violence. Relatives of a female patient admitted to the ward allegedly misbehaved with medical staff and attacked them, prompting hospital authorities to lodge an FIR at the local police station.
Following the complaint, police launched an immediate investigation and arrested two accused — Abhijit Das and Abhijit Shil, both residents of Kankraban. They were later produced before the court with a request for police remand to facilitate further interrogation.
Preliminary findings suggest that the incident started when the relatives demanded a wheelchair for the patient. A verbal argument ensued with the attending nurse and doctor regarding its availability, which soon turned violent. Both medical professionals reportedly sustained minor injuries during the assault.
Hospital staff and on-duty security personnel intervened to control the situation and alerted the police. The incident triggered outrage among healthcare workers, who demanded stronger protection and stricter enforcement of safety protocols within hospital premises.
Reacting to the assault, officials from the state health department condemned the incident in strong terms and assured that strict legal action would be taken against the perpetrators. They emphasized that any form of violence against medical staff performing their duties would not be tolerated.
The authorities also hinted at plans to review and enhance security measures in government hospitals to prevent similar incidents in the future, ensuring a safer environment for both patients and healthcare workers.
