In a significant breakthrough, police have arrested the eighth accused in connection with the gruesome dacoity and murder case that claimed the life of elderly Shanti Ranjan Das. The arrest marks a major development in the ongoing investigation into the heinous crime that had shocked the local community.
The accused, identified as Ripon Miah, was apprehended during a joint raid carried out by personnel from Sonamura and Jatrapur Police Stations in the bordering village of Kalikrishnanagar. Police sources said the operation was conducted based on specific intelligence inputs regarding the suspect’s whereabouts.
According to officials, the investigation picked up pace after the wife of the deceased, who had been brutally attacked during the dacoity, regained consciousness and provided vital clues about the perpetrators. The assailants had presumed her dead and fled the scene, leaving her in a vegetative state. However, timely medical intervention saved her life, allowing her to later identify those involved in the attack.
Her statement proved crucial in helping police trace and apprehend the accused persons one by one, ultimately leading to the arrest of Ripon Miah. With this latest arrest, the total number of accused taken into custody has risen to eight.
Police said that the gang had broken into the elderly couple’s residence with the intent to loot valuables and, in the process, brutally assaulted them, resulting in Shanti Ranjan Das’s death. Authorities are continuing efforts to track down any remaining suspects and recover stolen items.
Senior police officials commended the coordinated efforts of the investigating teams and assured that all culprits involved in the crime would be brought to justice soon. The case remains under active investigation.
