Agartala, Aug 16 – Chaos gripped GB Pant Hospital on Friday after security guards intercepted a middle-aged man carrying the body of a newborn inside a bag. The man, identified as Nipu Das of Mohanpur under Sidhai Police Station, allegedly attempted to dispose of the mortal remains, triggering shock and panic within the hospital premises.
According to sources, Nipu had brought his wife, Shilpi Das, for treatment at the hospital. Soon after, security personnel noticed him behaving suspiciously and detained him, recovering the dead infant from his possession. Police were immediately informed.
“Prima facie, it appears the husband violently assaulted his pregnant wife, which led to premature delivery inside the hospital washroom,” said an on-duty police officer. “The woman has been admitted for treatment while the husband is under detention. Further investigation is in progress.”
Doctors confirmed that Shilpi was bleeding profusely when she was brought to the outpatient department and was referred to the gynecology ward. “We found that the placenta was protruding. Necessary medical procedures were undertaken, and she is stable now,” a treating doctor said.
However, the couple gave contradictory statements. While the woman reportedly denied delivering a baby, allegedly to shield her husband, Nipu claimed innocence. “My wife delivered the baby inside the washroom and later asked me to keep it. I sensed it was dead and concealed it inside the carry bag,” he told police.
The couple, who already has an 11-year-old son, is now under police scrutiny. Investigators are probing whether domestic violence played a role in the incident, as inconsistencies in their statements continue to deepen suspicion.
Police have assured a thorough inquiry to establish the circumstances surrounding the newborn’s death and the alleged attempt to hide the body.
