Agartala, August 6:  In a significant breakthrough against drug trafficking, Amtali police, acting on a tip-off, recovered 21 grams of brown sugar from a residence in the Motinagar area late Tuesday evening. The contraband, valued at around ₹1 lakh in the illegal market, was seized during a joint operation conducted with personnel from the Tripura State Rifles (TSR).

The operation was carried out at the house of Mina Begum, who has since been taken into custody. Officer-in-Charge of Amtali Police Station, Paritosh Das, confirmed that a case has been registered under Case No. 77/2025. Legal proceedings have been initiated under Sections 21(B), 25, and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Following her arrest, Mina Begum was produced before the court on Thursday evening. The police have sought her remand for further questioning to uncover the wider network potentially involved in the drug trade.

The investigation has also led to the identification of another suspect, Shoaib Mia, a resident of Gabardi, who is believed to be a co-accused in the case. Police teams are currently making efforts to trace and apprehend him.

Authorities suspect that the recovered brown sugar was intended for distribution across several localities in and around Agartala. This seizure adds to a growing list of narcotics busts in the region, underlining concerns over the rising drug menace.

Police sources have reiterated their commitment to cracking down on drug rackets operating in the state and have appealed to the public for cooperation in reporting suspicious activities.

Further developments are awaited as the investigation continues.
