Agartala, July 15 — Former CPIM MP Sankar Prasad Dutta has come under fire after making controversial remarks about Lord Hanuman during an event at Muktadhara Auditorium, sparking backlash from BJP leaders and local residents of the 6-Agartala Assembly constituency.

The comments, which many perceived as disrespectful and reflective of an atheist stance, triggered strong reactions across the state. In a symbolic act of protest and outreach, BJP karyakartas, accompanied by local community members, visited Dutta’s residence to present him with a copy of the Hanuman Chalisa and a portrait of Lord Hanuman.

The group stated that their intention was not confrontation, but a respectful effort to encourage reflection and religious awareness. “We offered the Hanuman Chalisa and Lord Hanuman’s portrait as a gesture of faith. Our aim is to bring people back to the path of dharma, not to create conflict,” one of the BJP workers said.

The BJP members also criticized the former MP and Communist leaders more broadly for allegedly making derogatory remarks about Hinduism over the years. “There’s a long-standing pattern where leaders from the Left insult our Sanatan Dharma and deities,” the party worker added.

Dutta’s remarks have since drawn widespread criticism from religious and political groups who accuse him of disregarding the sentiments of the Hindu community.

While Dutta has not yet responded publicly to the BJP’s visit or the controversy, the episode has intensified the ongoing discourse around religious sensitivity and political rhetoric in Tripura.

The incident highlights the deepening religious and ideological divide in state politics and comes at a time when the BJP continues to emphasize its narrative of cultural preservation and spiritual awakening.
