Agartala, July 3 – The centuries-old Kharchi Puja, a vibrant and sacred festival dedicated to 14 deities, began on Thursday with traditional rituals at Puran Habeli in Khayerpur, around 8 km from Agartala. Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha inaugurated the seven-day celebration, accompanied by key dignitaries and devotees.

A major cultural and religious event in Tripura, Kharchi Puja attracts lakhs of devotees each year from across the country. Organisers expect around 15 lakh participants this year, depending on weather conditions. However, due to internal unrest in Bangladesh, fewer visitors are expected from the neighbouring country.

Originally a tribal Hindu festival, Kharchi Puja has now become an inclusive event observed by all communities. The rituals feature colourful processions, chanting of mantras, drumbeats, and worship of 14 deities — including Shiva, Durga, Vishnu, Laxmi, Saraswati, and Ganesha — in a grand temple built in the 18th century.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP President and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda extended greetings to the people of Tripura on the occasion. The festival, meant to cleanse mortal sins, begins with a traditional procession led by the Tripura Police band and a ceremonial guard of honour for the Chief Royal Priest, Raj Chantaiya.

As per the 1949 Tripura merger agreement, the state government continues to sponsor the Kharchi Puja, along with other royal-era temples. The festival continues to be a vital part of Tripura’s heritage and spiritual life.
