Agartala, June 1: Continuous rainfall across Tripura has led to severe flooding in several low-lying areas, displacing thousands and prompting the establishment of emergency relief camps across the state.

In Agartala, the state capital, residents began evacuating late Saturday night as torrential downpours caused sudden and intense waterlogging. Many affected individuals reported being caught off guard by the rapid surge in water levels, forcing them to abandon homes, valuables, and essential documents.

According to the State Emergency Operation Centre, over 7,000 people have taken shelter in 34 relief camps set up across various districts. Schools and government buildings are now being used as temporary shelters to accommodate the displaced families.

The state government, in coordination with local volunteers, is providing food, clean drinking water, and other essential supplies to those in the camps.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for West Tripura and Khowai districts, warning of continued heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds. An orange alert remains in effect for the remaining six districts, keeping the entire state on high alert.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, urging citizens to avoid flood-prone areas and follow safety advisories as more rain is expected in the coming days.
