Agartala, May 31: Continuous rainfall over the past two days has caused significant damage to various stretches of national highways across Tripura, severely affecting road connectivity and public movement. In several areas, ongoing highway construction has further worsened the situation, adding to public inconvenience.
In response to the deteriorating road conditions, Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Friday held a telephonic conversation with Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari. During the call, the Chief Minister apprised the Union Minister of the highway damages caused by the incessant rains and urged him to expedite both repair and pending construction work.
Sources in the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said that Union Minister Gadkari gave a positive response and assured Dr. Saha that the Ministry would take swift action to address the issue. The assurance is expected to bring relief to commuters and residents who have been struggling with blocked or damaged routes, particularly in low-lying and remote areas.
The state has witnessed severe weather conditions over the past few days, with heavy downpour causing not just flooding and property damage, but also impacting key infrastructure. Several national highway segments—vital for movement of goods, emergency services, and daily commuters—have suffered damage, resulting in traffic disruptions and delays.
Chief Minister Saha has been closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with both central and state agencies to ensure timely intervention. The state government has also activated disaster response teams and mobilized necessary resources to clear debris and maintain alternate connectivity wherever possible.
Efforts are now focused on ensuring swift restoration of road infrastructure, particularly in areas critical for transportation and public access.
