Agartala, May 23: In a significant move toward environmental conservation, the Tripura government marked World Turtle Day for the first time with a state-level event held at Dhanya Manikya Mukta Mancha in Udaipur on Friday. The programme was inaugurated by Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy, who highlighted the deep cultural and ecological significance of turtles in the state.

Speaking at the event, the minister emphasized that the Tripureswari Temple in Udaipur is also known as ‘Kurma Pith’—a reference to its location atop a hillock that resembles the shape of a tortoise. He noted that devotees regard the turtles inhabiting Kalyan Sagar Lake, adjacent to the temple, as sacred symbols of Goddess Tripura Sundari.

The event focused on the importance of turtle conservation, breeding efforts, and species monitoring—vital steps toward safeguarding the state’s rich biodiversity. The minister stressed that protecting turtle habitats contributes to broader ecological stability and reflects respect for the balance of nature.

“This is not just a celebration of turtles but a commitment to preserving their habitats. Maintaining social and ecological balance through biodiversity protection is essential,” said Singha Roy, noting that the government is committed to advancing conservation initiatives.

Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma also addressed the gathering, underscoring the direct link between biodiversity and human survival. “To protect human society, the ecosystem must be preserved, and that includes plants, animals, and birds,” he said.

The programme saw the participation of several dignitaries including MLA Abhishek Debroy, Chief Conservator of Forests R.K. Samal, Gomati Zilla Parishad President Deval Debroy, MLA Jitendra Majumdar, District Forest Officer H.B. Ganesh, and Matabari Panchayat Samiti Chairman Shilpi Das. Gomati District Magistrate Tarit Kanti Chakma and Matabari Block BDO Arijit Pal were also present.

The event concluded with a pledge to strengthen conservation efforts, raise public awareness, and ensure the protection of endangered turtle species in the region.
