Agartala: April 21: Reports have emerged alleging that Bangladesh Border Guards interrupted embankment repair work along the Manu River in Kailashahar, Tripura. The disruption reportedly began four to five days ago, halting restoration efforts that started a month ago. This has raised concerns about potential flooding risks during the upcoming monsoon season.

The restoration work aims to improve flood control and address long-standing maintenance gaps in rural areas within Kailashahar Municipal Council jurisdiction, including Vidyanagar, Durgapur, Sonamara, Gobindapur, Safarkandi, and other regions. The embankment also serves as the primary access route to Kailashahar’s only cremation ground, located near the India-Bangladesh border—a site that has been in use since before Bangladesh’s independence.

According to reports, workers were allegedly scolded and ordered to stop repair activities near the cremation ground by Bangladesh Border Guards. Following the incident, local Border Security Force (BSF) personnel raised the issue with the subdivision administration. Kailashahar Sub-Divisional Magistrate Pradip Sarkar formally informed Executive Engineer Ranjay Debbarma of the flood control department, who escalated the matter to senior officials.

Efforts to address the situation involved Kailashahar Municipal Council Chairperson Chapla Rani Debroy, Executive Engineer Debbarma, and local councilor Manashi Bhattacharya. Authorities continue to work on resolving the disruption and ensuring the timely completion of the embankment repairs to safeguard Kailashahar against flooding risks.
