Agartala: Mar 26: During the 2024-25 fiscal year, inmates in Tripura contributed ₹2.78 lakhs in revenue through agricultural and material production, as revealed during the budget session of the Tripura Assembly. While this year’s revenue reflects a slight decline compared to the previous year, it is ₹45,000 higher than that of the 2022-23 fiscal year. The revenue, deposited under the ‘Head of Account’ in the government treasury, highlights consistent contributions by inmates over the past three years. Additionally, in a rare instance of inmate rehabilitation, a Gandachara Sub-Divisional Jail inmate successfully passed the secondary examination in 2024, marking significant progress.
The Assembly session also highlighted the challenges faced by Tripura’s agriculture sector due to heavy rainfall and floods in August 2024. Official records indicate that 2,05,578 farmers were affected, with financial assistance totaling ₹29.46 crore distributed to them. Of this, ₹20 crore was provided to 1,60,229 farmers, and ₹9.46 crore to 45,349 horticulture and other farmers. In Khowai district alone, 6,231 hectares of land were submerged, causing severe livelihood disruptions.
Farmers in Rishyamukh and Padmabil blocks, where 3,787 and 429 hectares of land were damaged respectively, received financial and agricultural aid, including ₹1,000 for Kharif crops, winter vegetable seeds, and ₹2,880 per kani for clearing debris. Jhum cultivators faced significant losses, with 1,079.44 hectares of crops damaged due to excessive rainfall. The state government has committed to providing further assistance under the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) and has announced plans to extend insurance coverage to potato and watermelon farmers starting from the 2025-26 fiscal year, aiming to enhance livelihood security.
