Agartala: Dec 31: A 35-year-old male wild elephant, injured by a speeding train, has died. The elephant passed away around 9 PM yesterday while receiving initial medical treatment in a forest in the Teliamura sub-division of Khowai district. Despite the efforts of veterinary doctors, the elephant could not be saved, according to a wildlife department official.

The incident occurred on Saturday night when a local train traveling from Agartala to Dharmanagar struck the elephant in the Shalbagan area, under the jurisdiction of the Teliamura forest division. The impact resulted in severe injuries, including broken hind legs, leaving the elephant immobile. Upon receiving the news, forest and livestock development department veterinarians began providing medical assistance to the elephant. Despite their best efforts, the elephant succumbed to its injuries late last night.

Today, a post-mortem was conducted in the presence of three veterinary doctors and officials from the livestock development department. Afterward, the elephant’s body was buried in a pit.

In response to the incident, the Tripura Forest Department has filed an FIR at the Teliamura GRP (Government Railway Police) station and lodged a written complaint with the Divisional Manager of Northeast Frontier Railway in Lamding. The forest department claims that the death of the elephant was a result of negligence by the railway authorities.
