Agartala: Dec 23: The Member of Parliament (MP) from East Tripura, Kriti Devi Singh, had written to the Union Health Minister, JP Nadda, requesting the establishment of a medical college and hospital in the ADC (Autonomous District Council) area, similar to AIIMS. In response to this letter, the Union Health Minister informed that, at present, there is no proposal for the establishment of an AIIMS-like medical college and hospital in Tripura. However, he assured that the Tripura government could submit a proposal for assistance in strengthening the state’s healthcare infrastructure, and the Ministry of Health would respond promptly to any such request.

In his letter, the Union Health Minister mentioned that under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has already been established in Assam to strengthen healthcare facilities in the North-East region. Additionally, under the PMSSY scheme, the Tripura government has been granted approval to enhance Agartala Medical College by constructing a super-specialty block. However, he clarified that there is no proposal for an AIIMS-like hospital and medical college in Tripura under the PMSSY at the moment.

The Minister further stated that the National Health Mission (NHM) under the Ministry of Health provides financial and technical assistance to various states and Union Territories to develop their healthcare infrastructure. He assured that if the Tripura government submits a proposal for enhancing healthcare services in the East Tripura Parliamentary area, it would be given due consideration, and swift assistance would be provided by the Ministry of Health.
