During the protest, the healthcare workers claimed that on the night of December 5th, Shyamal Das, the former deputy chairman of the Unokoti district council and the current BJP-elected member of the Unokoti district council, along with two others, entered the district hospital and misbehaved with Dr. Dhrupad Das who was on duty. They even assaulted the doctor.

Subsequently, a complaint was filed at Kailashahar police station by the victimized doctor. The police registered the case and started an investigation. On the afternoon of December 6th, the police arrested Shyamal Das and two others and sent them to court. However, by the evening of December 6th, all three attackers were released on bail by the court.

Angered by the release of the attackers on bail, all the doctors at Unokoti district hospital met with the Unokoti district superintendent of police on December 7th and expressed their dissatisfaction with the Kailashahar police station. They argued that the attackers were granted bail due to the police’s weak stance.

As a protest against the police’s weak stance, the healthcare workers at Unokoti district hospital went on strike on Wednesday. The healthcare workers stated that if no action is taken immediately, a larger movement will be started against the attacks on doctors in Unokoti district.
