Agartala: August 12: On August 6, an incident occurred in the border Golchakkar area of the capital, where a young man named Jahangir Hossain was allegedly attacked by two individuals, Jhuton Das and Ramzan Mia, along with their accomplices. The attackers reportedly threatened Jahangir with firearms. Following the incident, local residents blocked the road, prompting police intervention and assurances of action against the accused.
Subsequently, police visited the residence of Jhuton Mia but did not find him at home. The police then visited other suspects’ homes but were unable to locate them. The West Agartala police station requested the women of the house to appear at the station the following day. On Monday morning, Jhuton Mia and Suman Mia were taken to the NCC police station from West Agartala police station and were subsequently arrested.
In response to the arrests, family members of the detained individuals gathered at the West Agartala police station, asserting the innocence of Suman Mia and Tinku Mia and demanding their release. The situation was brought under control after discussions between the police and the protesters.
Residents who blocked the road on August 7 expressed concerns about ongoing incidents of hooliganism in the area, allegedly involving Jhuton Das and Ramzan Mia. They reported that these individuals have been creating an atmosphere of fear by roaming the area with firearms. Despite filing complaints with the police and local clubs, residents claim they have not received justice.
The residents have called for the eviction of the accused from the area, citing previous incidents, including a severe assault on December 31. Although the accused had previously promised to refrain from such activities, residents allege that the situation has not improved, and they continue to live in fear.
